History: The Papillon, meaning 'butterfly' in French, gets its name from its signature upright ears that resemble butterfly wings. One of the oldest toy breeds in Europe, the Papillon dates back several centuries and was favored among French and Belgian nobility. Its likeness appears in numerous Renaissance paintings, often sitting on the laps of queens and noblewomen. The breed descends from small spaniels and was originally bred for companionship. A close variation, the Phalène ('moth' in French), represents the drop-eared version. Today, the Papillon is celebrated for its beauty, intelligence, and cheerful disposition, making it a top choice for families, agility competitors, and dog lovers alike.
